June 1 — Santa Monica, CA to Palm Springs, CA (149 Miles)
Our group got an early start at Santa Monica Pier. We were greeted by six Santa Moinca motor cycle police who escorted us through the streets of Santa Monica. From there it was off to St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood, about 22 miles away. We arrived to a cheering group of hospital employees. David Hirsch and Greg Bishop, founder of Boot Camp for New Dads, made brief remarks about the Dads Honor Ride and new BCFNDs program at St. Francis. Many Great Dads Coins were presented to those present. Telemundo covered the event in both English and Spanish.
The group then set off to Palm Springs. Temperatures were in the low 90s most of the day. The elevations were moderate. In all the group covered 149 miles, with 9.5 miles of actual riding time and in about 13.5 miles overall arriving in Palm Spring under the light of a full moon. The last 20 miles the riders were boosted by 25+ mile tail winds and the aid of an impromptu police escort on and off US 10. We had Carl’s Jr. for dinner. I hope this isn’t foreshadowing for the meals to come. Thank God for allowing safe passage on the first day.
