June 3 – New York, NY to Yardley, PA (66 Miles)
Good morning and greetings from Yardley, PA.
We’ve traveled a total of 297 miles. The day started with a heavy drizzle and sputtered most of the morning. We started the day in Atlantic Highlands at the ferry terminal where boats come over from the Wall Street/Pier 11 terminal.
The first dads to be honored were two members of the Atlantic Highlands Police Department Captain David Rossbach and Sergeant Harry Murtha (40), who became a dad of twins just one week ago. They also provided an escort through the borough of Atlantic Highlands neighborhoods and put us on the scenic bike trails we would ride most of the day.
Leaving New Jersey
We spent most of the day in New Jersey leaving Trenton and crossing the bridge over the Delaware River into Morrisville, PA. Once in Yardley, PA we were picked up by two Lower Makefield police cruisers. After arriving at the Newtown-Yardley Hampton Inn, we presented officers Gerry Scherf, a former U.S. Marine and Sergeant Mike Histand with Great Dad Coins.
We had a delicious dinner at Carlucci’s along with 33 year veteran Mike Histand, who shared a heartbreaking story about his son Brian, an accomplished BMX biker, who went missing in Arizona in May of 2013. His remains were found in January 2016 and Brian’s story was retold in the documentary series Disappeared – Off the Grid, Season 7, Episode 4.
