Dads Honor Ride visits Sandusky
SANDUSKY — After riding 57 miles along Lake Erie from Cleveland to Sandusky on Monday, the Dads Honor Ride crew stopped in town to rest overnight before continuing to Toledo. The group is on an estimated 1,500 mile journey from Boston to Chicago to raise awareness about children growing up without father figures.

The second annual Dads Honor Ride kicked off on Memorial Day in Boston and will end in Chicago on Father’s Day.
Last year, the cycling campaign netted about $75,000 for local fatherhood charities.

A man from the Chicago area plans to bicycle all the way home from Boston to urge fathers to deeply engage with their children.
David A. Hirsch, 55, believes that many of society’s ills, from high dropout rates to drug abuse to crime, are connected to children growing up without fathers or other strong male role models.
“We’re trying to get the message to fathers to be more present in their children’s lives . . . financially present, physically present, emotionally present, and spiritually present,” he said. “I call that the mantra of fatherhood, or the four pillars of being a great dad.”

Dads Honor Ride is a cycling and fundraising campaign. The inaugural ride DHR15 took place from June 1-21, 2015. The ride started in Santa Monica, CA, loosely followed the iconic Route 66 and concluded in Chicago on Father’s Day.

During daily phone calls to check in with her husband, who was in the midst a cross-country bicycle ride, Peggy Hirsch would hear the sound of cars flying past him and cringe a little.

Constable: Can Barrington dad pedal from California by Father’s Day?
As founder of the Illinois Fatherhood Initiative, David Hirsch of Barrington needs to make it back home from California in time to celebrate Father’s Day. To accomplish that, the 54-year-old broker and financial adviser must pedal his bicycle 2,211 miles in 21 days. And he’s looking for volunteers to join him along the way.
