June 14 — Chandler, OK to Claremore, OK (92 Miles)
Greetings from Claremore, OK and the completion of day 14 of the Dads Honor Ride.
We’ve traveled just over 1,600 miles since leaving Santa Monica on June 1st. The
days have been long, but the time is going by quickly. Started the day just west of
Chandler. We rode for an hour and then decided to have breakfast at the iconic Rock
Cafe (in Stroud, OK), one of a dozen famous Route 66 restaurants listed in a guide.
See below. Cloudy but no rain today. We discovered one of the sources for father
absence. See yard sign below. Made it to Tulsa. After an insane drive to find a
place to eat, we ended up at Pizza Express, got Chris Miller to the airport and then
logged another 30 miles after dinner.
It was nice to have young Dave Hirsch ride
for the past three days and about 300 miles before flying home from Oklahoma City.
It was also nice to have Chris Miller, the army veteran from St. Louis, who rode in
the first few days in CA and then returned to help crew. Only seven more days
before the ride concludes on Father’s Day at U.S. Cellular Field.
Thank you to those who have participated and to those who have donated. Please
remember to make a donation in honor (or memory) of your dad here. Thank
you!!!!
- Rusty old buffalo.
- Great place for breakfast. Dates back to the 1940s.
- Hay bales everywhere.
- The epicenter for all things Kelly.
- Strategy session with Lincoln and Chris.
- Not sure what the statue of liberty was doing in front of Dominos in Bristow, but thought it would make for an interesting photo.
- One of the Dads Honor Ride donors. Hey, only 708 miles to go. I think I can do this.
- On the outskirts of Tulsa.
- After our gourmet meal at Pizza Express, with Jasmine, our waitress, who told me an amazing story about her stepdad, holding his Father’s Day gift.
- All in all a relatively light day of riding compared to some of the days gone by.
