21 DAYS, 1 BIKE, AND 2,355 MILES Being a dad in the 21st century is more challenging than in previous generations. More is expected from us, and research indicates that children benefit from a higher level of engagement with a father or father figure. Dads, we need to up our game! The recent Dad’s Honor Ride 2015 was the inaugural event of the 21st Century Dads Foundation (see box). The journey started on June 1, 2015 at the world-famous Santa Monica Pier in California—loosely following the historic Route 66—and concluded on Father’s Day, June 21, in Chicago at U.S. Cellular Field.

As founder of the Illinois Fatherhood Initiative, David Hirsch of Barrington needs to make it back home from California in time to celebrate Father’s Day.
